If you’re interested in a career in broadcasting you may have asked yourself if you should work in radio or tv. There are a number of exciting career paths that you may take. The two most popular broadcast media are radio and television – but how do you know which is right for you?
Looking for a TV Career?
Television is obviously more of a visual medium than radio, which means it requires strong visual skills, camera work, and special effects skills. Or, if you are going to be on-screen, such as a news broadcaster, you’ll need to have the appearance, confidence and personality to win over viewers. You’ll also need to be able to tell a story well, writing broadcast news, commercials, or feature stories. There are technical, behind-the-scenes jobs for every TV broadcast, but also on-screen positions available.
Careers in TV broadcasting include jobs like:
- Camera operator
- Lighting technician
- Production assistant
- Copywriter
- News reporter
- News producer/director
Looking for a Radio Career?
Since radio depends solely on audio broadcasting, working in radio is more suited for people who have strong writing skills (to conjure up the listeners’ imaginations), as well as the technical skills required for operating a sound board, microphone, and other radio equipment. As a DJ, you may attend in-person and community events to promote your station, but with a radio career, you are more likely to be heard than seen.
