How has TikTok Changed Video Production?

TikTok has been taking the world by storm. The popular video/social media app is available in over 150 countries, has over 1 billion users, and has been downloaded over 200 million times in the United States alone. It’s also changing the way people look at video production. Check out these trends that show how TikTok is making an impact on how videos are made now and in the future.

Keep it Short

TikTok videos are 15 seconds or less, although they can be strung together for up to a minute for a single post. And while that’s longer than Vine’s 6-second limitation, it’s still not a lot of time. Short-form content is becoming increasingly popular as people’s attention spans continue to shrink (as does their tolerance for ads). Telling a powerful, entertaining or compelling story in 15 seconds is a creative challenge, but TikTok has proven it can be done and done well.

Fast-Paced & Attention-Grabbing

Since TikTok videos are short, they tend to be very fast-paced and action-packed to immediately grab attention. This usually means quick cuts and instant transitions. (Remember the “Wipe it Down” Mirror Challenge?) These videos often play with time – requiring outfit changes etc. behind the scenes – which appear to happen right before your eyes.

Play with Onscreen Text

Instead of dialogue or narration, many TikTok videos rely heavily on onscreen text. People may film themselves pointing to different areas and then add text bubbles that pop up afterwards. This allows for the videos to effectively get their message across even without sound.

The Importance of Sound

But hey, sound is still very important on TikTok. Many videos feature people lip-synching to someone else’s audio, or doing a dance challenge to a specific song. Fun music or a driving beat can also help make the content more engaging and share-worthy.

Bottom Line: Video Production is for Everyone

TikTok shows that people of all ages, skills and perspectives can make great videos. The app has taught many people the basics of what makes a video stand out, and has inspired people to make their own videos and be creative.
