Top Tips on How to Pursue a Career in Audio Engineering

If you’ve been considering a career in audio engineering, you may already be aware that the competition can be fierce. Yes, there’s no shortage of talent in the recording industry in general, which can make pursuing a career as an audio engineer – an intimidating prospect. But doing what you love for a living is the whole point, right? Yes! And you can blaze a trail to your dream job in the world of sound. To help you do just that, we’ve put together our top tips for how to pursue a career in audio engineering.

1. Save your work

So, you can show your work! In other words, create a portfolio of everything you’ve done and get it out there using an online audio distribution platform like Soundcloud. Having all your work in one place that is accessible to anyone – is the first step to being heard

2. Promote yourself on social media

The second step to being heard is to get the word out where people are likely to see it. That is hands down social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Create your own page or even a website to showcase your music.

3. Look for unpaid gigs

Yes, unpaid. Volunteer. The reality is that to land your dream job, you need experience. And if you’re a newbie, you’re not likely going to be offered paid gigs right out of the gate. Look for internships at local recording studios, theater groups, or radio stations.  You’ll not only gain valuable experience; you’ll be building valuable connections.

4. Speaking of connections

If you build them, the jobs will come? Well, they will surely be more likely if you have a solid network of contacts within the industry. Get to know who, what, where, and how about the industry professionals in your area. Join any social media industry groups and start reaching out to get to know the artists around you. Networking and growing your base of industry contacts is a great way for jobs to actually find you!
